Day 3: The Real Thing

“Once upon a time, there was a drink that hit the spot. Nobody asked which spot.” The second half of the simulmake, on the same stage.

The Mystic Theatre stage: two founders in top hats shaking hands under a giant pair of hypnotic red eyes
They just looked at him, gently, a moment too long.

It was born with a fizz in 1886, by two men of science and a marvellous mix of leaves and nuts. They named it the obvious way, after the very ingredients themselves, and shook hands, very proudly, on LEAVESNUTS.

A stable boy heard the name and snorted. The gentlemen didn’t. They just looked at him, gently, a moment too long, “and he bought the first crate, and he hummed the first song.”

The Council’s rule

The Council heard about the stable boy, and that was that. No eyes on the public. No humming. You do it the regular way. The founders had a regular way, and it was the kick in the fizz, which was perfectly legal back then. Not that the gentlemen drank it. They took theirs red.

Then one night the telephone rang, and the call came from the worst two numbers alive, the Five-O. The special ingredient had to go. Now LEAVESNUTS is clean, and it’s called New Nuts. And nobody wants New Nuts.

The country did not say thank you. It howled for its Original Nuts.

The Chemist and the Regulator

The board meets at midnight with the curtains drawn tight. They itch: one look, one hum, and it would be fixed by morning. But the Council says no. The regular way, or nothing. So they turn to the Chemist, who shows them a trick, two ruses and three sneaks: “We don’t sell the drug, you see. We sell the sugary key. Their bodies finish the recipe.”

Every test in the land comes back clean. The Regulator tests it. Clean. So he drinks one, to be sure. Then another, to be really sure. Then a few dozen more. By the end he doesn’t want them caught. He wants the file closed, and his fridge full.

They hid it in sugar, they hid it in snow, in a bear and a song and a jolly “ho, ho”.

The loophole

Now, the Council said never the eyes on a crowd. It said nothing of screens. So a screen is allowed.

The Real Thing

There’s a look in the bear, and a hum in the song, and whatever you watch, you catch. They print on the can, with a shrug and a sigh, “Fine. Tastes the same as the real thing.” It’s not a lie. The board hasn’t aged since the day it began. There’s no mirror in the boardroom, and no garlic in the can. The founders still sleep upside down in the rafters.

“And if you’ve watched all of this, and you’re suddenly thirsty... don’t come to me. I’ve no idea why that happens.” The Council’s health notice agrees: that’s a coincidence.
